If you’ve never visited Melbourne before and don’t know a lot about the city, you might have asked whether there is anything to see and do in the city. Well, the honest answer is there’s probably too much to see and do, and to write about everything Melbourne has to offer would likely take up several thick books.
In this post, we’ll highlight just a select few of the things you can do on a trip to Melbourne.
Watch the Formula 1 Grand Prix In March
The very first Grand Prix of the Formula One season kicks off at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne in March of each year. It’s glitz, glamour and a world-class event which encompasses far more than just very fast cars whizzing around a racetrack.
If you’ve never experienced the thrill of Formula One, then get trackside at Albert Park. After dark, you can take in the sights of the city, enjoy some fine dining and party the night away at many of their top-class bars and clubs.
Experience Some Rooftop Wining and Dining
You can do it in the daytime, but it’s a lot more spectacular and atmospheric at night. The Melbourne CBD actually has quite a few rooftop bars that also serve snacks and dinners. Take in the evening scene while enjoying a beverage of your choice or sharing a meal with friends.
In the warmer months, a rooftop bar is a cool place to be, and if it’s during the cooler times of the year, outdoor heaters and blankets are available to keep you warm and toasty.
Daytime or night time, experiencing Melbourne’s rooftop bar scene is something every traveller to the city should do.
November Is Melbourne Cup Time
Australia’s most famous horse race, and possibly the country’s most popular sporting event, the 2019 Melbourne Cup, takes place on the first Tuesday in November. It’s a race that stops a nation – literally.
Everyone in the country stops to watch it, even people who normally don’t even follow thoroughbred horse racing. The race is like a national icon, and if you happen to be in Melbourne city at this time of year, you’re in for one hell of a party.
Take a Tram Tour of the City
Trams are everywhere in Melbourne, and travelling by tram is a cost-effective and great way to get around.
During the day there is a tram run that circles the city CBD. It’s designed as a sightseeing tour and really allows you to see what’s where and places you can visit during your stay.
At night time there are restaurant trams, where you can enjoy a delicious meal on the move. Take in the city by night, relax with a glass of wine and tease your taste buds with a sumptuous dinner.
For any other purpose, like getting from A to B anywhere in the CBD and the outer suburbs, trams are running every few minutes, making it so easy to get around.
A Shopaholic’s Paradise
All major cities have loads of shopping opportunities, and Melbourne is no different in that respect. One thing a lot of visitors appreciate though is the range of shopping opportunities. There is something on offer to suit every budget and style, and no matter what you’re after, you’ll find it in Melbourne somewhere. Even if you are in the market for a brand new Ferrari, you can get one in the city.
Chapel Street is renowned for its boutique clothing stores. It’s like Melbourne’s answer to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
And at the other end of the scale, there is the Queen Victoria Markets, very popular with tourists who love to hunt for bargains.
Another way to really enjoy the shopping experience is to have some adventure following all the cool laneways that filter all throughout the CBD. You’ll discover some really cool things when travelling these laneways, whether it’s hunting for unusual items, or finding a quaint little cafe hidden away.

This post has barely touched on what you can do on a trip to Melbourne, but it’s enough to give you an idea of what the city offers and whet your appetite.
