So you have finally decided, you are going for a solid wood. You have also chosen the oak flooring over the walnut one. But there are more things to a floor than you think. One of them is the shade you will go for. The look you create with a dark floor differs totally from the one you will have with a light wood. Therefore you need to be sure of the style you want before choosing the shade. If you are not sure of what is more suitable for your place, here we explore how both shades contribute to the look of your house.
Light Woods
This of course applies to many things, white, light grey, pale blonde… light floors are perfect if you are trying to open up room and make it larger. So of course they are ideal if you have a small room or if it doesn’t have enough light, they give a fresh and crisp feel to a room. They are also great to accentuate the furnishings and the interior design, acting as a subtle back drop. The style you generally get when pairing a light floor with furniture is a modern and contemporary look. A light grey for example will give you an industrial or Scandinavian look.
Light floors also have a practical feature, which is that they help hide the dust and dirt that the floor can collect. The same happens with scratches – they are concealed better. They are also often easier to clean and maintain. As we were saying, there are lots of colours than can be considered light ones, and there is not really a rule on how light you need to go on your floor, it will really depend on what you like and what goes better with the style you are seeking.
Dark Woods
Dark woods are perfect when it comes to make a statement. They add sophistication and richness to a place. They also give a boost to the decoration of your room so you don’t need much else in it. Dark wood matches amazingly with bold colours or can also emulate earthy undertones, which is great if you are looking to bring the outdoors in. The contrast in colours and textures are a big hit at the moment, and wood floors are perfect to achieve this.
For both light and dark wood floors, you have different finishes that add charm to the room. One of the most popular is matte, due to the fact they are great at hiding scratches and they do this better than the glossy finish. They are also much easier to clean than the latter. However, glossy finishes have their advantages too, for example if you have a small room and you have chosen a dark floor over a lighter one, a glossy finish will help to open up the space by bouncing the light.
So there you have it, a few things you should consider before choosing the shade of your floor, but of course the choice is yours and it all depends on what you like better and what makes you happy!
